eToro Details

The eToro group is a globally recognized Israeli fintech broker, founded in 2007. It offers investors 5000 trading instruments, including CFDs, forex, and exchange-traded securities.

The company’s mission is to empower individuals to grow their knowledge and wealth as part of a global community of like-minded investors.

eToro launched the world’s first social trading platform in 2010, CopyTrader™, which enabled investors across the globe to join the fintech revolution. The platform attracted global recognition, winning the Finovate Europe Best of Show for 2011.

Today, the company offers services across the world, with an impressive 27 million registered users from 140+ countries. In 2022, eToro introduced services for the first time to US investors.

The brokerage currently operates four global entities; eToro (Europe) Ltd, eToro UK Ltd, eToro AUS Capital Limited, and eToro Seychelles Ltd. Your relevant trading entity will be determined by your country of residency. Regulatory details are discussed in this review below.

Trading Platform

Since the launch of the revolutionary eToro trading platform in 2010, the firm has improved the features of the terminal significantly.

The platform and widgets can be used directly via all major web browsers or can be downloaded as a mobile app to iOS and Android devices. This means the platform is compatible with all desktop and Mac devices.

When we used the eToro web terminal, we were pleased with the simple and intuitive interface, with easy-to-use features and navigational tools, ideal for beginners.

The multi-asset platform has integrated many useful functions such as one-click trading, TipRanks research and a professional-grade technical analysis tool. A unique product offered by eToro is the ‘Smart Portfolio’. The feature generates ready-made investment strategies for day traders to use.

Multi-Asset Platform

eToro CopyTrader

This platform incorporates the main features and products of the historical trading terminal, plus new developments, hence giving clients access to the best of both worlds from a single interface.

In addition to being able to copy trades and trade independently, eToro also allows clients to earn extra income by becoming a “Popular Investor”. This is not something many brokers offer.

As a Popular Investor, users can allow others to view their trading activities. Once the trader has managed to achieve a minimum number of copiers, he will be rewarded with cash and rebates on the spreads that he pays.

To qualify as a popular investor, you need to deposit a minimum of $1000. In addition, you must also recruit a copier for a minimum of 2 months with at least $500 equity or finance.

In line with keeping their reputation as an industry innovator, eToro introduced the concept of “portfolios” to copy. The new service appropriately named “CopyPortfolios” will allow traders to copy a range of assets selected by eToro.

Charting

eToro also delivers technical analysis and research tools on the platform. These features are flexible enough to benefit both professional and amateur traders. The offering includes deep market data across the range of products, which means a strategy can also be back-tested. These tools allow analysis of real-time prices too, so trends can be identified and marked up.

While other forex brokers may score higher in terms of analysis tools, the charts at eToro will suit the majority of traders, whatever their level of experience.

Assets & Markets

Over the years, eToro has expanded its asset offering substantially. Today, traders can invest in over 5000 instruments including 49 currency pairs, 264 ETFs, 15 global stock indices, 24 types of commodities and 3000+ worldwide company stocks. Fractional shares are also available, allowing users to own a portion of a single share and lowering the barriers to entry for beginners.

The firm has also been long-time pioneers of cryptocurrency trading. They offer the largest range of crypto tokens anywhere, currently listing 76 digital currency coins, and are focussed on expanding this market whenever an established token reaches the mainstream.

Spreads, Fees & Commissions

eToro is transparent when it comes to trading fees. There is no charge to open an account and no cost to maintain a profile including when utilizing copy trading services or when investing in Smart Portfolios.

It is free to deposit to a live account, however a $5 withdrawal fee applies (minimum withdrawal of $30). Note, Platinum, Platinum+ and Diamond Club members can achieve discounted withdrawal fees.

Day traders can invest in stocks commission-free. Buy in bulk or just a fraction, from as little as $10. eToro charges a single 1% fee for buying or selling crypto, though this is added to the market bid/ask price.

Spreads apply for all CFD trades:

As withdrawals and deposits are conducted in US Dollars, trading in a currency outside of this may incur a conversion fee. These rates will vary based on the account denomination and will be converted at the live foreign exchange market price.

Note, after 12 months with no login activity, a $10 monthly inactivity fee will be charged on any remaining available balance. No open positions will be closed to cover the fee.

Leverage Explained

The broker permits leverage on all CFD traded instruments, though available margin will vary by asset class and eToro trading entity. This can be fully customized, and also, does not have to be used at all when trading. We outline the maximum leverage available below to day traders:

For all retail clients of eToro (Europe) Ltd, eToro (UK) Ltd, and eToro AUS Capital Limited:

For clients of eToro (Seychelles) Ltd:

Remember, although trading with leverage can increase profit prospects, it can also increase losses. Ensure you have appropriate risk management strategies in place.

Mobile Apps

eToro also provides a free mobile trading app which clients can download and install on portable devices, ideal to trade on the go. The application has been designed for both iOS and Android-powered mobile devices to allow full mobility and access to the financial markets at the same time.

You can deal on real-time prices, view historical trades and open news and customer service sections – all from your device. Copy trading services and watchlists are also fully functional from the app.

When we used the eToro mobile app we thought it was well laid out and fully navigational, with all the functionality of the main web platform retained. All versions of the app are regularly updated with the latest features. A recent update saw the Android (APK) version reduced in size by 50% – with no loss of functions. The mobile application saw a significant speed improvement from the new, lighter programme.

Deposit & Withdrawal Policy

There are several ways in which you can fund your trading account at eToro, or make a withdrawal. Initial minimum deposit amounts vary by trading entity, ranging from $10 to $10,000. When we used the eToro platform in the UK, we were required to deposit just $10 to start trading. The majority of other jurisdictions sit within the $50 minimum deposit requirement category, making investing accessible for beginners.

We outline the supported payment methods below:

eToro broker review

When making a deposit to your eToro account, follow the steps below:

  1. Login to your account
  2. Click on ‘deposit funds’
  3. Enter the amount and chosen currency
  4. Select your preferred deposit method

The processing of withdrawal requests typically takes three business days. However, traders should ensure that the withdrawn amount should be a minimum of $50, or else the request will be rejected.

Note, the broker charge clients a withdrawal fee of $5 on every transaction made.

eToro Money

eToro has also rolled out a free physical debit card for UK traders. This is available to holders of the broker’s investment account and enables instant, fee-free deposits with no FX conversion charges. Spend your money anywhere, anytime, with the exclusive debit card. From the payments area, users can also make global transactions with highly competitive conversion rates.

A digital debit card is currently available to EU clients including in Cyprus, Ireland, France, Italy and Portugal, though the broker hints this feature is due to roll out globally in the future.

Demo Account

A free demo account is available to eToro traders. This is a great platform if you wish to try out the broker’s tools and services before committing any real money.

The paper trading profile is credited with $100,000 so you can build a virtual, multi-asset portfolio. You can practise trading all instruments including cryptocurrency and stocks. Although a simulated platform, users still have access to live, real-time prices.

The registration process is the same as signing up for a live trading account. Once you open a demo profile, you can also toggle between a live account status by selecting the “real” account tab.

Bonuses & Promotions

While using the eToro platform, we were not offered any promotions or joining bonus incentives. Some global territories will be impacted by the ESMA restrictions on financial incentives introduced in 2018.

Nonetheless, the broker runs a friends and family referral program. For every successful referral, you can earn $50. Remember to check the terms and conditions of financial incentives before exploring as unrealistic minimum thresholds and requirements may be set.

Regulation & Licensing

eToro is registered under four global entities, with relevant regulatory oversight:

The levels of support and protection will vary by global regulator, though we can confirm CySEC, the FCA and ASIC are all top-tier authorizations providing retail investor compensation schemes and segregated client funds.

All traders benefit from negative balance protection, meaning you cannot lose more than you invest.

Note, eToro is available to traders in multiple jurisdictions, including Mexico, Singapore, Malaysia, and Nigeria. The trading broker is not available in Canada and India, among others. Paying taxes in your local jurisdiction is your responsibility.

Additional Features

Education

Our experts were impressed with the number of educational resources and content available to day trading clients. eToro hosts a full online training academy with all the tools to become a successful investor. Training materials include integrated video content, live webinars, podcasts, online tutorials and full step-by-step guides.

Information is split clearly into experience levels, so regardless of your previous trading knowledge, there is something for everyone. Topics include long-term investment strategies, risk management tools such as stop loss features and learning to trade with leverage.

Crypto Wallet

eToro offers a multi-crypto on-chain wallet. The phased rollout will see the feature opened up country by country, and the available list of cryptocurrencies will also expand as time goes on. The wallet offers high level of security, with multi-signature sign-in supported – this means users can view their blockchain transactions without having to expose their private key.

The mobile app (available from Google Play and the Apple App store) will allow the buying and selling of cryptocurrency using fiat currency. It also permits the conversion of one crypto or virtual currency to another. Four cryptos were included at the launch (Bitcoin, Bitcoin cash, Ethereum and Litecoin). Others will be added as the app scales up. Conversion will initially be limited to Platinum Account holders, but ultimately expanded to all traders.

The app is open to any registered eToro customer and makes accessing an otherwise complex market easy.

NFT Trading

Following rising demand for non-fungible tokens, eToro launched a $20 million NFT fund in 2022 to promote new art and build out its suite of investment services. Known as eToro.art, the initiative will support both NFT creators and brands and will ultimately help reduce barriers to entry for aspiring investors. eToro also has plans to spend a further $10 million on NFT projects in 2022.

The company has made clear that it wants to expand beyond digital art and will turn to third parties to enhance the valuation process. The aim is to improve the sometimes extortionate floor prices and sales that reach tens of millions of dollars. If the project goes to plan, everyday investors should find it easier to get in on NFT drops and collections with more affordable entry points.

Account Types

To simplify the experience, eToro provides one standard trading profile. Opening a trading account is a simple and straightforward process which requires you to fill out and submit the online registration form. New profiles can be approved within one working day.

Note, to deposit and withdraw from a live account, you must submit identity documents such as a passport or utility bill. A professional account is also available in some jurisdictions.

Benefits

Pros of registering for an eToro account vs alternatives include:

Drawbacks

Cons of creating an eToro account include:

Opening Hours

The platform is available 24/7 but assets will only be available to trade when the respective markets are open. So US Stocks will only be available when US markets are open on Wall Street, for example. Forex (eg EURUSD) is available around the clock during the week, as there is always at least one market open somewhere in the world.

Since trading is often a 24/7 business, eToro allows specific trading and investing orders to be placed, even if the platform is down for maintenance. Weekend trading is available when markets are open, so forex becomes available on Sunday and the Australian and Asian markets open and start the week.

A full calendar is available on the broker’s website with details of upcoming events, contract expiry dates and the latest market hours.

Customer Support

For a renowned broker, we were disappointed when reviewing eToro’s customer service options. Although customer support is available Monday to Friday, 24 hours a day, available methods are limited. Clients may submit a query via the online contact form. Alternatively, live help chat services are available within the platform interface. It was a shame to see no helpline phone number or direct email address.

Note, the customer support team can help with a series of questions, from how to close an account and overnight fees to risk scores for copy traders, account verifications and limits, plus where to find a beginners guide to the broker’s trading platforms and investing apps.

Safety & Security

The eToro platform provides a secure trading environment. All transactions are communicated using Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology, ensuring that your personal information is kept safe. Client funds are kept in secured tier-one banks. Users can also enable 2-factor authentication (2FA), adding an extra layer of security.

In addition, the broker runs a Vulnerability Disclosure Program on HackerOne to receive and keep a record of submitted security issues.

Is eToro Suitable For Day Trading?

If you are a beginner trader who is just starting out, then eToro could be the right broker. The ability to conduct social trading is a feature that could potentially enhance the profitability of a beginner.

On the downside, the broker’s spreads are higher than those offered by other providers. As a day trader that relies on small margins and a large number of trades to make an overall daily profit, the additional cost incurred may erode away at any gain that is made from day trading.

eToro Verdict

eToro is a leading global brokerage with an innovative and powerful social trading platform. Access thousands of assets within one profile. Day traders can utilize an extensive learning academy, copy trading and crypto-based features all within regulatory approved entities. There is something for everyone when investing with eToro. We recommend checking them out.

Accepted Countries

eToro accepts traders from Australia, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Italy, Denmark, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Qatar and most other countries.

Traders can not use eToro from Iran, Turkey, Japan, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, India, Madagascar, Macao, South Africa, Thailand, United States.
