Robinhood Delay UK App Launch Due To Controversy

Robinhood Delay UK App Launch Due To Controversy

Many novice traders in the UK were looking forward to the UK launch of Robinhood, an investment app that claims to be democratising finance for millions of traders. However, after facing pressure from US authorities and politicians, the app has announced it will be delaying its UK launch.

Trading Apps

The main function of the Robinhood app, which has over 13 million US users, is to allow new traders to buy and sell financial products without depositing a minimum sum or paying commission.

The current waiting list for the app in the UK has over 250,000 people, many of whom were looking forward to the app being launched later this year.

Individuals on the waiting list were greeted this week with a message from Robinhood explaining the app launch would be delayed.

The email read, “We’re saddened to share that we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone our UK launch indefinitely… We’ll be closing our waitlist and taking down our UK website shortly.

The world has changed a lot over the past several months and we’re adapting with it.”

Media Focus

The app, currently valued at $8.6bn, received a lot of media and political attention after a 20-year-old US user, student Alex Kearns, killed himself in June.

Kearns is believed to have killed himself due to mistakenly believing he had lost $730,000 (£575,000) on the app.

Kearns, unfortunately, seemed to misunderstand the app, due to lack of trading knowledge as his account was actually up $16,000 at the time of his death.

Robinhood has received approval from the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) and was expected to launch in Spring 2020.

Although the launch delay is ‘indefinite’, there is hope for UK residents who plan to use the app as Robinhood also stated in their email;

“although our global expansion plans are on hold for now, we will continue our work to democratise finance for all and we look forward to the day when we can bring this mission to the UK.”

Existing Robinhood employees in the UK are expected to move to the US, while a team of skeleton employees will remain in the UK under the guidance of Wander Rutgers, former TransferWise executive.

Learn how we test brokers and why you can trust our ratings.

This is why we think these brokers are the best in this category in 2026:

  1. IG 4.8/5 IG offers a superb all-round trading app. One of the pioneers of mobile trading, the application has been developed and refined over many years, meaning it is now among the best trading apps. Quick response, user-friendly layout, access to full charting and a stable and reliable application. It also offers guaranteed stops – an important risk management tool not available on many apps we’ve tested.
  2. XTB 4.8/5 Year after year XTB's app stands out for its slick design and uncluttered interface that we love. It’s quick, responsive and packed with useful features, notably integrated sentiment data, market news, economic calendars and education. The user-friendly order panel underneath the trading chart also makes placing trades, including adding take profit and stop loss levels, really straightforward.
  3. FXCC 4.6/5 FXCC elevates mobile trading with the MT4 app on iPhone, iPad, and Android, perfect for day traders with its reliable, advanced charting featuring 30 indicators, 9 timeframes and 3 chart types. It's incredibly easy to dive into trading on the MT4 app through an FXCC ECN XL account, with just 3 simple steps. The app offers the flexibility to trade a great selection of over 70 currency pairs and other global markets on the go.
  4. Spreadex 4.5/5 Spreadex delivers a first-rate mobile trading app on iOS and Android, featuring sophisticated charts with intervals from 1 tick to 1 month and 10+ years of historical data. Price alerts are also easy to set up using the bell icon next to each asset, ensuring you don’t miss opportunities. However, integration of features like the economic calendar and market updates could be improved, as they redirect you to an external browser, dampening the mobile trading experience.
  5. Interactive Brokers 4.3/5 The IBKR Mobile app, available on both iOS and Android devices, makes your phone a powerful gateway to your IBKR accounts, offering you the freedom to keep an eye on portfolios, initiate trades, and dive into real-time quotes and charts, all while managing your account activities on the fly. This app stands out for its intuitive design, making it especially welcoming for those just starting their trading journey, providing a smoother and more accessible experience than the more complex TWS platform.
  6. Pepperstone 4.8/5 Pepperstone excels for its excellent integration with the MT4, MT5, cTrader, and TradingView apps, making it a standout option for day traders familiar with these leading third-party trading solutions. These platforms deliver a stable and reliable mobile trading experience, enhanced by Pepperstone's almost unrivalled execution speeds and wide range of asset classes. Recent improvements also helped it secure second place in DayTrading.com's annual 'Best Trading App' award for 2025.

Pros

  • The IG app offers a superb mobile trading experience with a clean design that helped it secure Runner Up at our 'Best Trading App' award.
  • As a well-established broker, IG operates under strict regulatory guidelines in multiple jurisdictions, maintaining a high level of trust.
  • IG offers an extensive collection of professional and engaging educational resources, including webinars, articles, and analysis.

Cons

  • IG applies an inactivity fee of $12-$18 per month after 2 years, deterring casual investors.
  • Beginners might find IG’s fee structure complex, with various fees for different types of trades or services, potentially leading to confusion or unexpected charges.
  • IG has discontinued its swap-free account, reducing its appeal to Islamic traders.

XTB

XTB stands out as a top choice for new day traders with the terrific xStation platform, low trading costs, no minimum deposit, and excellent educational tools, many of which are seamlessly integrated into the platform.

Pros

  • XTB has boosted its interest rate on uninvested balances and added zero-fee ISAs (On ETFs and real shares, or 0.2% with transactions over €100k) for UK clients with a huge range of markets available.
  • The xStation platform continues to impress with its user-friendly interface and intuitive features, including customizable news feeds, sentiment heatmaps, and trader calculator, reducing the learning curve for newer traders.
  • First-class 24/5 customer support is available, including a friendly live chat with response times of under two minutes during testing.

Cons

  • The demo account expires after just four weeks, a serious limitation for traders who wish to thoroughly test the xStation platform and practice short-term strategies before committing real funds.
  • XTB does not offer a raw spread account, which is becoming increasingly common among competitors like Pepperstone, and may disappoint day traders looking for the tightest spreads.
  • The research tools at XTB are good but could be great if they went beyond in-house features with access to leading third-party tools such as Autochartist, Trading Central and TipRanks.

FXCC

FXCC continues to prove itself an excellent option for day traders with a particularly strong selection of 70+ currency pairs, ultra-tight spreads from 0.0 pips during testing, and a free VPS for qualifying traders.

Pros

  • The free VPS for qualifying traders and the ability to build or buy EAs on MetaTrader make FXCC a strong option for algo traders.
  • FXCC has stepped up its offering over the years, adding MT5 to its suite of platforms, hundreds of stocks and more cryptos to its product line-up, plus a copy trading feature and greater margin trading opportunities.
  • Customer support still relies on human agents with response times of under three minutes on live chat during our tests and knowledgeable reps - a welcome break from the frustrating AI chatbots increasingly offered by brokers.

Cons

  • Although regulated by the CySEC, FXCC’s offshore entity operates with weak regulatory oversight from MISA and may not provide safeguards like investor compensation in the event of broker insolvency.
  • Although the economic calendar has benefited from a facelift, FXCC still offers very little in terms of market research beyond basic daily technical analysis and aggregated market news, with no tools like Autochartist or social sentiment data.
  • FXCC charges steep withdrawal fees on many of its payment methods, including $45 for bank transfers and 2% crypto transfers, which may cut into the returns of traders making regular withdrawals.

Spreadex

Spreadex will appeal to UK day traders who are interested in both spread betting on financial markets and placing traditional bets on sports events. Fees are low on short trades and profits are tax-free on spread bets. There's also a powerful proprietary charting platform, plus £0 minimum deposit required to get started.

Pros

  • The web platform works well for active trading from testing, with one-click trading, watchlists, saved layouts, while Force Open all worked smoothly. It was easy to build a clean workspace and manage short-term trade.
  • Our fee analysis came through with the EUR/USD at 0.6 pips in quieter hours, while FTSE and S&P 500 spreads stayed in the normal competitive range for spread-betting brokers. For day traders, costs are fair.
  • Spreadex introduced trading signals to its desktop platform, powered by Autochartist, providing real-time, pattern-based insights to help active traders identify potential opportunities.

Cons

  • Execution is decent but not elite from our tests - we recorded 0.2–0.4 pip slippage on liquid markets in calmer periods, but news spikes pushed some fills toward 1 pip, and thinner AIM stocks regularly slipped by 2–4 points.
  • There is no MT4, MT5, cTrader, API, VPS, or algo support - leaving Spreadex much better suited to hands-on traders than anyone running automated or custom trading infrastructure.
  • Spreadex makes you use real money from the start, with no demo. It's one of the few spread betting brokers that fail to serve prospective traders this way.

Interactive Brokers

Interactive Brokers is one of the best brokers for advanced day traders, providing powerful charting platforms, real-time data, and customizable layouts, notably through the new IBKR Desktop application. Its superb pricing and advanced order options also make it highly attractive for day traders, while its diverse range of equities is still among the best in the industry.

Pros

  • While primarily geared towards experienced traders, IBKR has made moves to broaden its appeal in recent years, reducing its minimum deposit from $10,000 to $0.
  • With low commissions, tight spreads and a transparent fee structure, IBKR delivers a cost-effective environment for short-term traders.
  • Interactive Brokers has launched a unified interface that integrates prediction markets across three top exchanges: Kalshi, CME Group, and ForecastEx, with products where users can trade yes/no contracts on political, economic, and climate events, with fixed $1 payouts per contract, 24/6 market access, and interest on eligible held positions.

Cons

  • You can only have one active session per account, so you can’t have your desktop program and mobile app running simultaneously, making for a sometimes frustrating trading experience.
  • IBKR provides a wide range of research tools, but their distribution across trading platforms and the web-based 'Account Management' page lacks consistency, leading to a confusing user experience.
  • TWS’s learning curve is steep, and beginners may find it challenging to navigate the platform and understand all the features.

Pepperstone

Pepperstone stands out as a top choice for day trading, offering razor-sharp spreads, ultra-fast execution, and advanced charting platforms for experienced traders. New traders are also welcomed with no minimum deposit, extensive educational resources, and exceptional 24/5 support (18h a day on weekends).

Pros

  • After adding spread betting through TradingView, Pepperstone provides a seamless, tax-efficient trading experience with advanced analysis tools for financial spread bettors in supported countries.
  • Pepperstone has started providing trading in pre-IPO perpetual futures like SpaceX (SPCX.US-PERP) in select regions, such as the UAE.
  • Offers a dedicated CopyTrading app for traders who want a less active approach to trading, available in some countries.

Cons

  • Overnight holding fees are higher than that found with some Market Maker brokers (usually Benchmark + 2.5%). This makes pepperstone an ideal broker for day traders and forex scalpers but less suitable for swing traders who often keep position open overnight.
  • Execution may not feel as reliable in fast markets as headline speeds suggest. In our own testing, execution was fast at desired prices, but some community complaints focus on slippage, stop-loss fills and spread-sensitive order triggers during volatile conditions.
  • Pepperstone has removed support for several tools that elevated the trading experience for active retail traders, notably Autochartist, Capitalise.ai and a free VPS for qualifying traders (now only pro traders in some countries).
