Additionally, Pepperstone distinguishes itself by offering three currency indices (USDX, EURX, JPYX), not commonly found among alternative platforms. Pepperstone has now won our annual 'Best Forex Broker' award twice.
  6. IC Trading 4.2/5 IC Trading delivers remarkably narrow forex spreads across 60+ currency pairs, particularly on key forex assets like EUR/USD. Pros

  • Support at AvaTrade performed excellently during testing, with response times of 3 minutes and localized support in major trading jurisdictions, including the UK, Europe and the Middle East.
  • AvaTrade launched AvaFutures to offer low-margin access to global markets, then expanded in 2025 as one of the first brokers to add CME’s Micro Grain Futures.
  • Years on, AvaTrade remains one of the few brokers offering a bespoke risk management tool, AvaProtect, that insures losses up to $1M for a fee and is easy to activate on the platform.

Cons

  • The AvaSocial app is good but not great – the look and feel, plus the navigation between finding strategy providers and account management needs upgrading to rival category leaders like eToro.
  • While signing up is a breeze, AvaTrade lacks an ECN account like Pepperstone or IC Markets, which provides the raw spreads and ultra-fast execution many day traders are looking for.
  • AvaTrade’s WebTrader has improved, but work is still needed in terms of customizability – frustratingly widgets like market watch and watchlists can’t be hidden, moved, or resized.

Plexytrade

Plexytrade is a newcomer in the brokerage scene with attention-grabbing features like 1:2000 leverage, zero spreads on select instruments and fast execution speeds of less than 46 milliseconds. However, the absence of regulation is a significant concern, while the non-existent research and educational tools place it far behind industry frontrunners.

Pros

  • The choice of accounts provides a solution for various trading styles, with Gold Raw appealing to day traders owing to its spreads from 0.0 pips.
  • Plexytrade accommodates a range of trading methods and short-term strategies, including scalping, hedging, and automated trading.
  • Sub 50ms execution speeds are fast enough for intraday trading setups.

Cons

  • Deposits and withdrawals are exclusively facilitated through cryptocurrencies, as Plexytrade does not support bank cards, bank wire transfers, or e-wallets.
  • There are no research and educational materials, falling short of alternatives like IG, while access to the economic calendar is restricted to clients with balances of $500.
  • There are no social or copy trading features for inexperienced traders to replicate the trades of more experienced investors, trailing category leaders like eToro.

NAGA

NAGA is a snug fit for beginners who like to learn by watching others, delivering a more advanced social trading network than the majority of CFD brokers, featuring a leaderboard with top traders by profit and win rate, and a one-tap autocopy function in the platform and app that’s a standout.

Pros

  • During testing, we were approved to begin trading very quickly; after we provided our ID and proof of address, approval was granted the next business day, and the onboarding process included a suitability questionnaire — a responsible step that some brokers fail to include.
  • NAGA stands out among social brokers for its wide range of assets, offering over 4,000 tradable options. These include forex pairs, stock, ETF, and index CFDs, commodity CFDs, crypto, and even exchange-traded futures, which are rare for retail clients.
  • The copy-trading feature is the main reason to open a NAGA account, and it’s more advanced than what most CFD brokers offer. You can check a leaderboard of top traders by profit and win rate, then automatically copy their trades in the same app - only eToro offers something similar.

Cons

  • The 1:30 leverage limit only applies to clients in the EU (under CySEC) and the GCC (through Abu Dhabi’s ADGM). Clients from LATAM, Asia, and Africa use the Seychelles or FSCA entities, where leverage can go up to 1:1000 and there’s no compensation scheme. This mix of high leverage and little protection is a risk, along with concerns about its suspended Trustpilot score in 2026.
  • The $50 monthly inactivity fee is on the high end of the scale. It kicks in after two months of no activity, not every quarter like some brokers. If your balance falls below $50 while your account is inactive, NAGA takes whatever is left and closes your account.
  • NAGA’s pricing structure is tough on smaller accounts. There’s only one account type, but it has six tiers based on your deposit. The EUR/USD spread is about 1.7 pips at the Iron tier and drops to a competitive 0.9 pips at Diamond ($50,000 deposit) or 0.7 pips at Crystal ($100,000 deposit).

XM

With a low $5 minimum deposit, advanced charting platforms in MT4 and MT5, expanding range of markets, and a Zero account offering spreads from 0.0, XM provides all the essentials for active traders.

Pros

  • XM secured a category 5 license from the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) of the United Arab Emirates in late 2025, strengthening its regulatory credentials and making it a strong option for traders in the Middle East.
  • XM’s customer support has delivered over years of testing, with 24/7 assistance in 30 languages, response times of under 2 minutes and a growing Telegram channel.
  • XM’s Zero account is ideal for day trading with spreads from 0.0 pips, 99.35% of orders executed in <1 second, and no requotes or rejections.

Cons

  • Although trusted and generally well-regulated in some regions, XM also has global entities registered with the weak regulators like FSC (Belize) and FSA (Seychelles), whilst UK clients are no longer accepted, reducing its market reach.
  • While the XM app stands out for its usability and exclusive copy trading products, the selection of technical analysis tools needs to be improved to meet the needs of advanced traders.
  • XM is falling behind the curve by not offering cTrader, which is favored over MetaTrader by some serious traders for its smoother user experience and superior charting package.

Pepperstone

Pepperstone stands out as a top choice for day trading, offering razor-sharp spreads, ultra-fast execution, and advanced charting platforms for experienced traders. New traders are also welcomed with no minimum deposit, extensive educational resources, and exceptional 24/5 support (18h a day on weekends).

Pros

  • Offers a dedicated CopyTrading app for traders who want a less active approach to trading, available in some countries.
  • Award-winning customer support is available via telephone, email or live chat with response times of <5 minutes during testing and friendly agents knowledgeable about its products and trading tools.
  • Pepperstone provides trading in pre-IPO perpetual futures, including adding Anthropic in October 2026, giving traders 24/7 opportunities to speculate on anticipated share prices using cash-settled CFDs.

Cons

  • Overnight holding fees are higher than that found with some Market Maker brokers (usually Benchmark + 2.5%). This makes pepperstone an ideal broker for day traders and forex scalpers but less suitable for swing traders who often keep position open overnight.
  • Pepperstone has removed support for several tools that elevated the trading experience for active retail traders, notably Autochartist, Capitalise.ai and a free VPS for qualifying traders (now only pro traders in some countries).
  • Despite improvements to its range of markets, crypto CFD offerings are still fairly limited compared to other brokers who focus on this area, such as Eightcap, and there's no option to invest in real coins.

Pros

  • IC Trading provides industry-leading spreads, including 0.0-pip spreads on major currency pairs such as EUR/USD, making it ideal for day traders.
  • IC Trading offers unusual flexibility in its accounts, enabling traders to open up to 10 live and 20 demo accounts, meaning you can run separate profiles for different activities, such as manual trading and algo trading.
  • Trading Central and Autochartist are valuable tools for in-depth technical summaries and actionable trading ideas and are accessible from within the account area or the cTrader platform.

Cons

  • Customer support performed poorly during testing with multiple attempts to connect via live chat and no one available to assist, plus unanswered emails, raising concerns about its ability to address urgent trading concerns.
  • The educational resources are greatly in need of improvement, unless you navigate to the IC.com website, posing a limitation for beginners in search of a comprehensive learning journey, especially compared to category leaders like eToro.
  • Despite being part of the trusted IC group, IC Trading is authorized by a weak regulator - the FSC of Mauritius, with limited financial transparency and regulatory safeguards.

What Is CFD Forex Trading?

A contract for difference (CFD) is a contract between a buyer (trader) and a seller (broker) that stipulates that the difference between the current value of an asset and its value at the end of the contract will be paid to one of the parties at the expiry. CFDs allow investors to profit, or lose, from price movements without having to own the underlying asset.

How CFD Forex Trading Works

Essentially, CFD forex trading entails opening trades based on whether the value of one currency will rise or fall against another.

The investor can speculate on either upward or downward movement in the value of the currency. If they think the value of the base currency will rise, they will open a long position. If the value does increase, the net difference between the purchase and sale prices will be the net result of the trade (either profit or loss).

Similarly, the trader could believe the value will drop and open a short position. In this case, the profit or loss is the net result of the value between the initial price and the final value.

A good way to understand CFD forex trading is to look at an example, such as the GBP/USD forex pair. Consider that the ask price is 1.20720 and an investor believes the value of the pound (GBP) will rise against the US dollar. That investor purchases 1,000 pips of GBP.

Two weeks pass and the value of the GBP has risen as the investor predicted, the bid price is now 1.22220.

The trader is paid the difference between the initial ask price and the final bid price, multiplied by the size of the trade. That is 0.015 multiplied by 1000, which equals a £15 profit.

CFD Forex Trading Vs Spot Forex Trading

Forex trading can be conducted with or without CFDs, but what difference does it make?

In non-CFD (spot) forex trading, traders still speculate on the value of a currency rising or falling against its pair.

However, they then directly buy or sell the currency, depending on their position. This means the investor owns the currency itself and more money is required to buy the currency. Profit or loss is then finalised by directly selling the currency when the price has risen or fallen.

In CFD forex trading, you are only speculating on the value rising, without buying and owning the currency. CFD brokers usually require a much smaller margin (around 5%) and any profit or loss comes from the spread between the initial currency value and the final value of the currency.

Where You Can Trade Forex CFDs

CFD regulations vary in different countries. CFD trading, forex or not, is banned in the US and Brazil. However, many other major trading countries allow these instruments. Countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Hong Kong all allow forex and CFD forex trading in over-the-counter (OTC) markets.

Strategies

There are a few different trading strategies you can adopt when trading forex CFDs. We will run through four of the most popular below.

Day Trading

This is the practice of making short-term trades on the same day. Typically, the CFD forex trading position is held for anywhere from a couple of minutes to several hours before being sold, though it is not generally held overnight. The premise involves taking advantage of volatile forex pairs and requires high levels of concentration, you need to constantly monitor the market and be ready to make quick decisions.

Scalping

This is similar to day trading, except that positions are held open for minutes at a time and closed as soon as it becomes profitable. Again, this involves constant monitoring of the market.

The strategy hopes to minimise risk by reducing the opportunity for a reversal and profits are made by the aggregation of many low-profit, high volume trades. Margin trading is often used to facilitate scalping, though you should be careful as one large loss can erode a significant portion of your progress.

Position Trading

Position traders don’t take short-term approaches like day traders and scalpers. Instead, a position trader will buy CFD contracts and hold them for a few days or weeks. This is a strategy that doesn’t require such constant monitoring of the market but it can need perseverance if there are market dips.

Swing Trading

Swing trading is suitable in more volatile markets than position trading. The emphasis is on looking for strong price swings over one or several days. The strategy entails identifying short-term trends and waiting for signs of a reversal, trading against the trend once there are some. Swing trading may require that CFD forex positions be held overnight, incurring additional interest fees.

Pros Of CFD Forex Trading

  • High leverage
  • No shorting rules
  • Low/no commission
  • Instant order execution
  • Trade both short and long positions
  • No minimum day trading requirements

Cons Of CFD Forex Trading

  • Not all countries allow CFD forex trading
  • Quick execution makes it easy to overtrade
  • Financing fees can be high when contracts are held for days/weeks

How To Start CFD Forex Trading

This step-by-step guide will help you get started trading forex CFDs:

Choose A Broker

The first thing to do is select the best CFD forex trading brokerage for you. Low spreads and financing fees are two basic things to look out for, along with trading platforms, asset ranges and customer service.

There are many brokers, both regulated and unregulated. Forex and CFD trading with IG Group, Oanda or XTB are popular choices. Additionally, more options, like CFDs on forex, stocks, indices, oil and gold are available with XM.

Those investors looking for mobile trading may want to consider Trade Interceptor and xStation, both of which offer APK and iOS trading apps.

Select An Asset

Each forex pair comes with a different level of risk. Major pairs like USD/GBP are relatively stable and demonstrate strong liquidity. Exotic pairs such as GBP/HKD are more volatile and have more dramatic price movements, giving more potential for those that know what they are doing.

Open A Position

Once you have selected an asset, you can open a CFD forex trading position by taking out a contract. Be sure to check the leverage ratio and ensure you have the funds to cover any potential losses. Also, look at implementing stop loss and take profit orders to limit risk.

Monitor & Close Position

Keep an eye on the price and trends for the currency pair you have a position open on. Many platforms will have a mobile app for you to use on the go. Consider any fees when looking to leave the position open overnight. As soon as the price is right, close your position and finalise the trade.

Trading Tips

This list of tips will boost your CFD forex trading skills:

  • Stay Up To Date: Price movements can change rapidly and randomly. Make sure you are constantly monitoring the charts. Also, keep up with any news announcements, major stories can have a large impact on forex pairs.
  • Stop Losses And Take Profit Orders: Don’t let your losses run wild, set a stop loss to automatically pull out and stop yourself burning funds if the market swings against you. Equally, ensure the trade closes if the value hits a certain point. You don’t want to miss out if you were asleep at the time.
  • Demo Account: If your brokerage offers it, practise on a demo account before staking capital. These accounts are the perfect place to trial your strategies and get to know the platform you are using.

Final Word

CFD forex trading is a way to speculate on the foreign exchange markets without physically converting currencies. Investors can make use of high leverage rates and simpler fee structures than their spot forex counterparts. However, it is important to implement robust risk management systems and carry out detailed research to guide your strategy. See our list of recommended CFD forex brokers and follow the guide above to get started.
