Pros

  • As a well-established broker, IG operates under strict regulatory guidelines in multiple jurisdictions, maintaining a high level of trust.
  • IG offers an extensive collection of professional and engaging educational resources, including webinars, articles, and analysis.
  • The ProRealTime advanced charting platform is free as long as certain modest monthly trading activity requirements are met.

Cons

  • IG has discontinued its swap-free account, reducing its appeal to Islamic traders.
  • Beginners might find IG’s fee structure complex, with various fees for different types of trades or services, potentially leading to confusion or unexpected charges.
  • IG applies an inactivity fee of $12-$18 per month after 2 years, deterring casual investors.

Interactive Brokers

Interactive Brokers is one of the best brokers for advanced day traders, providing powerful charting platforms, real-time data, and customizable layouts, notably through the new IBKR Desktop application. Its superb pricing and advanced order options also make it highly attractive for day traders, while its diverse range of equities is still among the best in the industry.

Pros

  • Interactive Brokers has launched a unified interface that integrates prediction markets across three top exchanges: Kalshi, CME Group, and ForecastEx, with products where users can trade yes/no contracts on political, economic, and climate events, with fixed $1 payouts per contract, 24/6 market access, and interest on eligible held positions.
  • There's a vast library of free or paid third-party research subscriptions catering to all types of traders, plus you can enjoy commission reimbursements from IBKR if you subscribe to Toggle AI.
  • IBKR is one of the most respected and trusted brokerages and is regulated by top-tier authorities, so you can have confidence in the integrity and security of your trading account.

Cons

  • IBKR provides a wide range of research tools, but their distribution across trading platforms and the web-based 'Account Management' page lacks consistency, leading to a confusing user experience.
  • Support can be slow and frustrating based on tests, so you might find it challenging to reach customer service representatives promptly or encounter delays in resolving issues.
  • You can only have one active session per account, so you can’t have your desktop program and mobile app running simultaneously, making for a sometimes frustrating trading experience.

XTB

XTB stands out as a top choice for new day traders with the terrific xStation platform, low trading costs, no minimum deposit, and excellent educational tools, many of which are seamlessly integrated into the platform.

Pros

  • XTB offers fast withdrawals with payment within 3 business days, depending on the method and amount.
  • With an excellent range of educational materials, including training videos and articles integrated into the platform, XTB supports traders at all levels.
  • XTB has boosted its interest rate on uninvested balances and added zero-fee ISAs (On ETFs and real shares, or 0.2% with transactions over €100k) for UK clients with a huge range of markets available.

Cons

  • XTB does not offer a raw spread account, which is becoming increasingly common among competitors like Pepperstone, and may disappoint day traders looking for the tightest spreads.
  • Not being able to adjust the default leverage level of XTB products is frustrating, as manual adjustment can significantly mitigate trade risk, especially in forex and CFD trading.
  • The research tools at XTB are good but could be great if they went beyond in-house features with access to leading third-party tools such as Autochartist, Trading Central and TipRanks.

FXCC

FXCC continues to prove itself an excellent option for day traders with a particularly strong selection of 70+ currency pairs, ultra-tight spreads from 0.0 pips during testing, and a free VPS for qualifying traders.

Pros

  • The free VPS for qualifying traders and the ability to build or buy EAs on MetaTrader make FXCC a strong option for algo traders.
  • FXCC’s ECN XL account has been built with active traders in mind, featuring spreads from 0.0 with no commission, while also passing our execution speed benchmark for day traders.
  • FXCC has stepped up its offering over the years, adding MT5 to its suite of platforms, hundreds of stocks and more cryptos to its product line-up, plus a copy trading feature and greater margin trading opportunities.

Cons

  • Although regulated by the CySEC, FXCC’s offshore entity operates with weak regulatory oversight from MISA and may not provide safeguards like investor compensation in the event of broker insolvency.
  • FXCC charges steep withdrawal fees on many of its payment methods, including $45 for bank transfers and 2% crypto transfers, which may cut into the returns of traders making regular withdrawals.
  • Although the economic calendar has benefited from a facelift, FXCC still offers very little in terms of market research beyond basic daily technical analysis and aggregated market news, with no tools like Autochartist or social sentiment data.

Spreadex

Spreadex will appeal to UK day traders who are interested in both spread betting on financial markets and placing traditional bets on sports events. Fees are low on short trades and profits are tax-free on spread bets. There's also a powerful proprietary charting platform, plus £0 minimum deposit required to get started.

Pros

  • The web platform works well for active trading from testing, with one-click trading, watchlists, saved layouts, while Force Open all worked smoothly. It was easy to build a clean workspace and manage short-term trade.
  • Our fee analysis came through with the EUR/USD at 0.6 pips in quieter hours, while FTSE and S&P 500 spreads stayed in the normal competitive range for spread-betting brokers. For day traders, costs are fair.
  • In our live tests near London, Spreadex returned 120–200ms round-trip latency across 50+ FTSE and EUR/USD trades, with no requotes and mostly controlled slippage in normal market conditions.

Cons

  • There is no MT4, MT5, cTrader, API, VPS, or algo support - leaving Spreadex much better suited to hands-on traders than anyone running automated or custom trading infrastructure.
  • CFDs, financial spread bets, sports, and casino activity all sit in one pooled balance. For serious active traders, that means losses outside trading can directly reduce margin available for trading positions.
  • Spreadex makes you use real money from the start, with no demo. It's one of the few spread betting brokers that fail to serve prospective traders this way.

Trade Nation

Trade Nation suits discretionary traders who want to speculate on major indices like the US 500 or liquid FX pairs, and want the predictable all-in costs of fixed spreads. In tests, we found the fixed-spread TN Trader environment particularly useful for trading around scheduled economic releases owing to its reliable charting environment and because published spreads stayed capped.

Pros

  • Trade Nation accounts can now be linked with TradingView, providing advanced multi-charts and the ability to execute trades directly.
  • The broker expanded into Europe with regulated online trading services after securing authorization from Portugal's CVMV, boosting its safety protections for European residents.
  • The demo comes with a $5,000 practice account and you can request a one-on-one platform walkthrough by callback - this level of personal help is rare.

Cons

  • Offshore SCB and FSA entities allow retail clients up to 1:200 and 1:500 leverage compared to 1:30 in regions like the UK, Europe and Australia, so an FSA client can have 16 times the exposure of a UK retail client on the same trade, but with less oversight and no compensation scheme.
  • There is no raw or ECN pricing tier, which are often prefered by day traders. No matter how much you deposit or trade, you use the same fixed (or variable on MT4) pricing as beginners, making it unsuitable for scalpers especially.
  • The 2–20% rebate scheme is closed to FCA, CMVM, and ASIC clients, meaning active day traders in these regions who would benefit from transaction rebates cannot claim them.

WallStreetBets & GameStop

Buoyed by insider knowledge that Wall Street hedge funds had millions in short positions on the high street gaming retailer, Redditors jumped to purchase shares in the firm, causing a surge in the value of stocks.

In reaction, Robinhood suspended trade on GameStop shares to comply with ‘financial requirements’ the platform’s CEO Vlad Tenev confirmed.

Whilst heavily restricted, trade has now resumed after the firm raised $1 billion in emergency investment. But the damage to consumer confidence still remains.

Angry investors posted a barrage of 1-star reviews for the app on the Google Play Store. These have recently been deleted by Google, returning Robinhood’s average star rating to four.

Crypto Trading Suspended

In the wake of the volatility, other markets have also seen disruption.

Gold prices declined 0.2% and UK short positions in Cineworld and Pearson were also impacted. However, it was cryptos that saw volatility in particular.

The price of dogecoin, a relatively unknown crypto, soared by 800% after it gained traction on social media.

The spike in price and market activity led to Robinhood suspending instant cryptocurrency deposits on Friday, citing ‘extraordinary market conditions’.

For the second time in one week, the broker acted as a barrier between its customers and the financial markets. It was perhaps unsurprising then that loyal day traders were once again up in arms.

Alternatives To Robinhood

Retail day trader interest has quickly turned to alternatives to Robinhood. Competitor brokerages that offer stock trading and options are seeing a pique in new accounts.

eToro

Top alternatives to Robinhood include eToro, a social trading platform that offers trading in stocks, cryptocurrencies and CFDs. Clients can utilise social feeds to discuss strategies and copy positions. 50+ currencies, nearly 1,000 stocks and a portfolio of indices are also available.

In addition, the broker provides its own powerful trading platform with extensive customisation and a user-friendly dashboard.

Forex.com

Forex.com is one of the top rated online brokers offering access to over 180 global markets. Leveraged trading is available on forex, stocks, commodities and cryptos.

The broker also offers multiple live account options, competitive floating spreads and a choice of flexible deposit and withdrawal options.

Add in daily market updates and approval from a long list of respected regulators and it’s unsurprising Forex.com is a popular alternative to Robinhood.

Pepperstone

For those with an interest in forex trading, Pepperstone offers trading on six major currency pairs, as well as numerous minors, crosses and exotics.

CFDs are available on major instruments such as indices, commodities and shares. Australian-based Pepperstone also provides the leading MT4 and MT5 platforms, alongside a competitive £200 minimum deposit requirement to meet the needs of novice traders.

Final Word

The GameStop and crypto disruption has proven the volatility of financial markets and the risks involved. The reaction of Robinhood has also shown that not all brokers will respond how customers would expect. As a result, many traders will look for alternatives to Robinhood.

Fortunately, there are many top brokers available in today’s market.
